Frequently Asked Questions

Please email if your questions are not answered adequately below.

Adjunct therapy is treatment provided in addition to the therapy that a client receives from their primary therapist.  The client continues working with their primary therapist, and this therapist collaborates with me, so that I am providing just the EMDR treatment (or in some cases just therapeutic/trauma-focused yoga), while the primary therapist supports continued stabilization, and aftercare.

Clients receive intensive EMDR therapy over the course of 1-4 consecutive days of treatment, for 3-6 hours per day.

Intensives are ideal for many people/situations:

  • If you have been in therapy for awhile, have good insight and solid coping skills, but are still struggling or stuck in some areas, an intensive will likely be quite effective.  You have already put in the hard work to build those healthy, adaptive neural networks; the EMDR will shift what is stuck, so that trauma memories can be reconsolidated within the neural networks you've built up in your therapy work.
  • For people whose schedules do not permit attending weekly/twice monthly appointments, the intensives are a useful option that people do by taking PTO; sometimes intensives can be scheduled over a weekend.
  • Intensives are often the quickest way to reduce your suffering and achieve your therapeutic goals:  People typically experience significant positive shifts in mood, thought patterns, behaviors, and physical sense of wellbeing - as opposed to months or years of coping with severe symptoms while trauma work is done 1 hour at a time, week by week.
  • Intensives are more efficient than weekly sessions, in that more time is spent in deep reprocessing, rather than 15-20 minutes per session spent getting an update before, and stabilizing after reprocessing.
  • For some people, it can be difficult and take some time to access the material that needs to be reprocessed.  For these people, they are often just getting to the material, when it is time to wrap up the hour-long session. Thus many people do best with longer sessions.
  • For people who have a primary treatment goal of sexual assault recovery, VCAP funds can be used to pay for intensives.  If the sexual crimes took place in Pennsylvania, you do not need to have reported the crime to the police.

Reasons why an intensive may not be right for you at this time:

  • If you have significant dissociation that is not yet well managed, an intensive would likely be destabilizing.  To be clear, people with dissociative disorders can benefit from intensives.  Clients who have a solid awareness of their dissociative profile, and are grounded in working with their parts/ego states, may be good candidates for intensives.
  • Insurance does not cover intensive treatment at this time.  Cost can be prohibitive, unfortunately. (See above, the info regarding VCAP funds for sexual crime survivors.)
  • If you have complex attachment wounding, you may do better working with a therapist with whom you have developed a strong attachment over time.

I will be happy to provide recommendations as I am able.  Please feel free to reach out via email, and include the following information:

  • your insurance company, if you will be using your insurance
  • preference for in person and/or telehealth
  • if you want in person sessions, what towns/areas are you able to access
  • what you feel comfortable sharing, briefly, about what you are looking for in a therapist (for example, experience with grief, neurodivergent affirming, LGBTQ affirming, male, female, etc.)
  • your scheduling needs (daytime/weekdays/evenings/weekends)

Please understand that I will do my best to make recommendations to therapists in my professional networks, but I cannot personally vouch for other therapists, guarantee their availability, or guarantee that I can find one that meets all of your criteria.

I typically recommend to Favored Wellness in Coraopolis. This is a reputable group practice where all of the therapists are EMDR trained or in process of getting EMDR trained.  They accept most major commercial insurances, and Allegheny  County Medical Assistance.  They do not accept Beaver County Medical Assistance, but do sometimes have interns who will see clients pro bono.  If you have Beaver County Medical Assistance, there are some therapists at Glade Run Lutheran Services who have received EMDR training.  I apologize that I do not know who they are - you can try calling to ask.

Another option is the EMDRIA website directory.

On a limited basis, I may be able to help you with a recommendation, if you have explored the above options and not found anyone.
